The Cambodian Human Rights Action Committee (CHRAC), a coalition of 17 local NGOs, urges the Appeal court to review immediately the killing case of 16 year-old girl named Khun Dina, the daughter of a Sam Rainsy party activist in Kompong Cham, that is believed to be done by the village chief named Gnuon On.

"According to court observation by NGO workers, the prosecutor did not present evidence in court, but in fact, the trial judge himself analyzed the evidence in court showing clearly that he was not independent and neutral" said Mr. Sok Sam Oeun, Executive Director of Cambodian Defender's Project (CDP). " Two years suspension and five years probation for the killing of a young girl is an inappropriate verdict which sends the message that the government authorities are not committed to protecting victims" added Mr. Thun Saray, President of ADHOC.

According to information collected by NGOs workers, on the day of the murder, the perpetrator chased the victim and then shot her with an AK 47 riffle in the rubber plantation near where she lived. At this time, the victim's family is very concerned about their safety after the release of the perpetrator at the end of the Kompong Cham trial.

CHRAC urges the General Prosecutor of the Appeal court to review the case and seek justice for the victim and her family. Furthermore, CHRAC appeals to relevant government authorities to ensure the general security and protection of people in Cambodia.
