At 7 o’clock this morning, mourners will begin a procession carrying the body of Dr. Kem Ley from Wat Chas, Phnom Penh, to his home village of Ang Ta Kok, Takeo Province. It is expected that thousands of mourners will take to the streets to join the procession. On 10 July, Kem Ley was shot dead in a busy Caltex petrol station cafe in central Phnom Penh. One suspect, a former soldier, was arrested shortly after the shooting and remains in custody.

At 8 o’clock tomorrow morning, in protest against two draft laws, the Law on Associations and Non-Governmental Organisations (LANGO) and the Trade Union Law (TUL), hundreds of marchers will make their way towards the National Assembly from four locations in Phnom Penh. Both laws have been widely criticised in Cambodia and abroad for the threat they represent to Cambodian civil society. LICADHO will be livestreaming events from each of the marches throughout the morning.

Tomorrow is International Human Rights Day and a number celebrations, led by a variety of groups, are due to take place in Phnom Penh. Hundreds of peace marchers, who have been walking from across the country over the last five days, will come together in the capital to submit petitions at the National Assembly. Events will also be held by unions, the opposition party and a coalition of NGOs. LICADHO will be livestreaming events from across the city throughout the day.

Renowned human rights defender Venerable Loun Sovath will appear before the Phnom Penh Municipal Court in a flawed and protracted judicial process aiming to silence him. He has been charged with “incitement to commit a felony” for joining and supporting demonstrations by victims of land disputes throughout Cambodia.

Tomorrow morning at 9 am, Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) President, Sam Rainsy is scheduled to arrive at Phnom Penh airport after a short trip to France. During the last week, seven CNRP MPs elect and one grassroots activist have been charged with a number of offences and sent to pre-trial detention following violent clashes between district security guards and CNRP supporters that took place at Freedom Park on July 15. After violent clashes between security guards and Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) supporters at Freedom Park yesterday, 5 CNRP lawmakers-elect have been brought to the Phnom Penh Municipal Court for questioning. The court is heavily barricaded but CNRP supporters are gathering at the barricades. The CNRP are also holding a press conference this morning in response to yesterday’s events. The trial of 25 workers and human rights activists resumes today. The first day of the hearings on April 25 came to an abrupt end mid-afternoon when prison guards interrupted proceedings to transport those who had not been released on bail back to CC1 prison. The hearings are scheduled to resume at 8am.
